Wentworth Miller Comes Out as Gay

Prison Break star drops news in powerful open letter.

Wentworth Miller made a bold political statement to the St. Petersburg Film Festival in Russia on Wednesday, and in the process he came out as gay.

The Prison Break star penned an open letter to the festival in which he declined an invitation to be the guest of honor, citing the Russian government's homophobic policies as the reason. "As a gay man, I must decline," he said simply. "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he wrote. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."

The bi-racial actor was referencing Russia's new anti-gay law, which "criminalizes public expression of support for nontraditional relationships," according to news reports. Understandably, Russia's stance on LGBT relationships and same sex marriage, put into law by President Vladimir Putin last month, was met with protests from many in Hollywood.

While rumors of homosexuality have followed Miller throughout his career, the actor was still the object of much female attention during his years on Prison Break. This is the first time the actor has addressed his sexuality, and many are applauding him for the erudite way in which he did it.
