Kimora Lee Simmons and Kevin Hart are opening their hearts — and their wallets — to those less fortunate this Christmas. The celebs have each written big checks to charitable causes within the last week.
Simmons donated $50,000 to LIFE Camp, Inc., a New York-based anti-violence group that focuses on gun control. The organization, run by Erica Ford, was facing a shutdown when many of their usual sources of funding dried up and had to launch a crowdfunding campaign to keep their doors open. Thanks to Simmons' generous check, they crossed their goal and raised a total of $129,500.
“As a mother, an entrepreneur and a community member, I’m proud to support LIFE Camp and the work its founder Erica Ford has done to alleviate gun violence," the mother-of-three says. "The only way we will heal a country that is being torn apart by excessive violence is by properly funding groups that do the grassroots work in the community. I am proud to support such an important program.”
Hart, meanwhile, gave back to his hometown of Philadelphia by donating 500 computers to local schools and recreational centers. The gift from Hart couldn’t have come at a better time; the Philadelphia school district has suffered budget cuts that have led to 24 school closings.
"Coming here and actually seeing the computers put to use, it was shocking," said Hart, who toured the school district with the city's mayor and school superintendent. "Literally seeing the kids putting the computers to use put a smile on my face."
"I am what I am today because of Philadelphia. This city made me...all of my education came from this city," Hart told the students and staff at one of the schools he visited.
The futures of lots of young people are brighter thanks to Hart's and Simmons' generosity. Surely this will land them on Santa's "nice" list this year.
