Diahann Carroll Drops Out of A Raisin in the Sun

LaTanya Richardson Jackson will replace Carroll in Broadway production.

Diahann Carroll will no longer be playing Denzel Washington's mother in a new Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun. The veteran actress says she's not up to the rigorous demands of the stage at this time.
"The pace of filming movies and TV projects is quite different than the extensive amount of time preparing and appearing live on Broadway eight times a week,” the 78-year-old New York City native said in a statement.
LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson's wife, will replace Carroll in the role. At 64, she is just five years older than Washington.
The role of Lena Younger in the revival of Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 drama was meant to be Carroll's first role on Broadway in 30 years.
A Raisin in the Sun is still scheduled to open on April 3.
