The man arrested for throwing a banana peel at Dave Chappelle during a performance in Santa Fe says he didn't mean any disrespect toward the comedy icon. Christian Englander, who claims the stunt was misconstrued as a racial attack, added that he “thought a joker could take a joke.”
Englander, 30, tells the Albuquerque Journal that he threw the banana peel because he objected to Chappelle making jokes at the expense of his friend. He admitted that he was highly intoxicated at the time, saying that he had taken a shot and “definitely felt warm and fuzzy.”
At the very least, the incident didn't rob the audience of a complete set from Chappelle, who infamously walked off the stage during a show in Connecticut in 2013 after heckling from the crowd. This time, Chappelle worked the high jinks into his routine.
