Die-hard theater fans pay hundreds of dollars for tickets to shows starring history-making Tony winner Audra McDonald, but now, for a few bucks more, you can have the honor of a private meeting and performance. McDonald, who is currently starring in A Moon For the Misbegotten at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, is auctioning off hot chocolate dates to raise money for homelessness. For $2250, you and a guest can sip cocoa — and enjoy a short private performance — with the Broadway star.
That's just one of the prizes McDonald is offering to raise $25,000 for New York City non-profit Covenant House, a homeless youth shelter, by August 12.
For $1,000, she'll deliver a singing telegraph over the phone. For $250, you get a signed copy of McDonald's CD "Go Back Home." For $100, she'll tweet her thanks and for $50, she'll recognize you on her Facebook page.
A $500 donation gets you a video message and McDonald is offering to play Cupid. "If you want help proposing to someone, maybe I'll send the proposal for you," she said. "Or if there's someone special you always wanted to ask out, maybe I can help."
McDonald got involved in the effort last year when she spent time at Covenant House. "My heart broke open," she says. "All of a sudden, I felt like, 'I need to be a part of it.'" In October 2014, McDonald joined their board of directors.
The hot chocolate meetups will take place on November 19, after McDonald and other members of the theater community take part in a candlelight vigil in Times Square to show solidarity with the homeless.
