The Marvin Gaye
biopic has been making the rounds for a few years now. There are three biopics in the works on the legendary soul singer -- one by F. Gary Gray;
another starring Jesse L. Martin
(Law & Order
) that would be directed by Lauren Goodman; and Cameron Crowe
(Fast Times at Ridgemont High
, Jerry Maguire
) is also working on a biopic. Crowe offered the role to Will Smith
, who turned it down. Just recently, it was announced that Oscar nominee Terrence Howard
is in talks to be Marvin in Crowe's film -- no word on why Jesse L. Martin wasn't considered for Crowe's film. Reportedly, Berry Gordy
of Motown is supportive of Crowe's version and rights to Gaye's music have been approved.
The life of Gaye is a dream role for any actor. His story is full of ups and downs from drug addiction to international success and a complex artistry that many people mimic today. On April 1, 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, Marvin was shot and killed by his father due to a business dispute.
While I like Terrence Howard, I was most excited to see Jesse L. Martin. Also, I am hoping that no one tries to sing Marvin's songs -- what happened to the days of biopics when actors lipsynched like Angela Bassett
in Tina Turner
