Posted Aug. 31, 2007 - Every so often, an R&B teen sensation makes me wish I was 10 years younger, having thoughts of love and romance, and imagining a fairytale ending.
The youngin’ that has me daydreaming is Mario. Yes, the Baltimore-bred singer is My New Crush, and it all began in 2002 when he was just reaching the legal driving age, and he released the lead single, “Just A Friend,” from his self-titled debut album. That crush swelled following his sophomore set, Turning Point, and the sexy single, “Let Me Love You.”
I had to meet him. I wanted to know if the now 21-year-old is as smooth and loving as his song suggests. I’ve also been patiently waiting for another album. The release date was moved to May 8, 2007 … then to July … to August … and now to Oct. 9, 2007. C’mon. You’re killing me!
I caught up with Mario for the 411.

Dude, what’s up with the album? I can’t take it.
The new date is Oct. 30. There were some contractual problems, but now I am more fulfilled and happy with my life than I’ve ever been.
Good, I’m happy to hear that. Now, to my crush on you. “Let Me Love You” is one of my favorite songs ever, and I always wanted to know, is that song BS, or are you really that type of guy?
When I’m with somebody, I’m with somebody. I plan on being faithful, and I have been up to this point. I’m honest, and if there’s a situation where I feel this won’t work or I’m feeling a certain way, I say it. That’s what it is with me.
Basically, honesty is the best policy?
Exactly, because when you’re in the situation, sometimes, you can’t always see the whole picture. You’re only focusing on what’s happening at the present moment. That’s why communication and being able to trust your girl or man is so important. Being honest with yourself is always the hardest thing, but it helps you gain responsibility and see things for the way they really are.
One verse says, “If I was ya man/Never worry ’bout what I do/I’d be coming home back to you/Every night, doin’ you right.” Is that true?
That’s definitely spoilage right there. (Laughs) Basically, if I was in his position, I would do things a lot differently. You would never have to hurt; you would never have to cry. You never know, but that’s what I was feeling at the moment.

Were you speaking of a certain woman in your life?
That song was done about two years ago, so things changed a little bit. Obviously, in this song, she’s pretty much my dream girl.
Describe your dream girl?
I really don’t have a dream girl, but I hate to say this, but my dream girl was a “Dreamgirl,” and she is Beyoncé. I would love to go on a date with her. I would love to go on a date with Selma Hayek or Jada Pinkett, but Beyoncé is the dream girl.
She’s a Virgo; she’s intelligent; she is beautiful; and I think she’s funny. She’s real funny. She seems like a fun girl. She’s like a dream girl.

She’s too old for you.
I’m 21 now, so I’m considered a grown man.
What about Jay-Z?
Jigga, it’s nothing personal. I’m older now and it’s real. I’m just being honest. But really, I’m picky. I change up. I could like something now that I wouldn’t like a week ago. I like to have fun. I like chicks who like to have fun, girls who are honest, and who are creative. I like creative girls because sometimes creative people can get a little crazy. They can be weird, and I can be that, so I need somebody who can do the same thing. We need to be on the same page.
What’s the craziest thing a fan has done?
Well, I have had my pants pulled off in shows; I have had draws thrown on stage to me, condoms, rings, watches, hair. Once, I got draws sent to me in an envelope with a letter.
What did you do with the letter?
I kept it in my collection, so I can go back and re-read what was sent to me. So fans out there, I really do get your letters, and I really do read them.
Are you dating anyone now?
Not at the moment.
Your woman will definitely have to be understanding.
Of course, she has to understand that. But, my woman will be pursing a career herself, so she’ll be busy too. It’s a vice-versa type of thing. You have to have that give-and-take going on.
And she’ll have to deal with your acting fans too. I’m sure you have plenty of those as well.
You’re right because I want to do more acting too. If me and her fit, it will fit. But, no pressure, no pressure.
If you had to choose a leading lady for your next acting role, who would it be?
That’s a great question. There’s so many, but I was just talking about Stacy Dash to someone. I haven’t seen her in a film lately, so that could be pretty cool. From what I saw, I think she’s a good actor. We could do like a comedy/drama type of film because she’s more in the funny/drama type roles. And of course we could make it a little sexy too.
