Nicki Minaj's style these days is instantly recognizable, but during her youth, the rapper had less sense when it came to dressing up. In the latest issue of Vogue, Minaj channels an Avatar Na'vi dressed in red and talks about how she's spent thousands cultivating her new love of fashion.

“I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans,” she says of her high school days.

That is until someone who “dressed like a tiny lady — pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup” inspired her to have a little more fun with her outfits. “I had never seen myself made up before," she recalls. "I didn’t want to wash it off. I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.”

Now she goes all out with wigs, big and bold lashes, and colors and has Japanese designers custom-make her over-the-top looks. Still, the girl can't stay away from designer labels saying it came to a point where she was spending $50K a month on brand names.

“And I bought tons of Vuitton bags,” Minaj adds. “When you’re a young girl from Queens, you’re going to stock up on those bags.” always gives you the latest fashion and beauty trends, tips and news. We are committed to bringing you the best of Black lifestyle and celebrity culture.
