The Claws Come Out in Grace Jones's New Memoir

The eccentric fashion icon calls out celebs who've copied her image.

Grace Jones is about to take us on a wild ride through her eccentric life. The fashion icon has penned an autobiography titled I’ll Never Write My Memoirs in which she covers her career, defying societal norms by pushing up against its boundaries and all the sex, drugs and alcohol you could hope for. Jones said she’s not here to present a different version of who she’s been.

"I'm not intending to correct any versions of me that exist out there," she said. "I don't want to spoil any image people might have of me…. I can be a pain, but most of all, I can be a pleasure."

Jones even goes so far as to call out names of others in the entertainment business who were influenced by her image, but never bothered to credit her.

"Trends come along and people say, ‘Follow that trend.’ There’s a lot of that around at the moment," Jones wrote in an excerpt from the book. "‘Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them – except to the extent that they are already being like me."

No one could ever say that the 67-year-old model/actress/singer didn’t see an opportunity to completely mold her own space within the industry. That’s the difference between her and stars nowadays, Jones said. Everyone is just a copy of each other and the rise to the top comes a little too easily to teach the importance of standing out and holding your own.

“There is no long-term vision, and they forget that once you get into that whirlpool then you have to fight the system that solidifies around you in order to keep being the outsider you claim you represent,” she said. “Every singer given a makeover or a few weeks on a talent show seems to be called a diva these days! Christ almighty. Where’s the exclusivity? It’s so commercial now."

The memoir was co-authored with Paul Morley and published by Simon and Schuster. To read an excerpt from the book, click here.
