Timing Is Everything

Three best times to take care of your health.

When it comes to your health time is of the essence but when it comes to some health matters there are some times that are better than others to get things done. So if you’re going to do these three  things this is when you should get them done.

Best Time For a Breast Self-Exam: The best time for a self breast exam is a few days after a woman’s menstrual cycle, when the breast tissue is least swollen. In women younger than 40 years old, full breasts can lead to false positives. This is part of the reason why the American Cancer Society recommends that women at this age get only get clinical breast exams only once every three years.

Best Time to Check for Skin Cancer: Once a month you should check your skin on your own, but you should still see your doctor once a year for a professional assessment. Between visits try to remember the ABCDEs: asymmetry (if the mole or growth has a weird shape); border (if it has an odd border); color (if it has more than one color); diameter (if it's larger than a pencil eraser) and evolving (if the growth is changing).

Best And Worst Times For Surgery: Mornings are the best time for surgeries and mid-afternoons are the worst. Patients that have surgery between nine a.m. and noon had the lowest rate of complications due to anesthesia, according to a study published in the Quality and Safety in Healthcare. Though the complications weren’t usually life-threatening, ones between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. had more prolonged sedation, wound infection, nausea and vomiting.
