This week marks the sixth annual Harlem Arts Advocacy Week in New York City and residents will be able to participate in a slew of cultural events. The event kicked off Monday with a speech by actor Danny Glover and will run through Oct. 7. During the week, arts programs, film screenings, exhibits, concerts, walking tours and other activities will be available to the public for free.
"Harlem has fantastic arts organizations and fantastic artists with fantastic reputations," said Michael Unthank, the former executive director of the Harlem Arts Alliance, the nonprofit that's sponsoring Advocacy Week. "This is an effort to increase their resources, their visibility and the involvement of their community — and to push and promote the cultural life of Harlem."
