When Victor Cruz learned that one of the young victims from the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was a huge fan, the New York Giants wide receiver decided to wear Jack Pinto's name on his cleats during Sunday's game and then visit the family of the six-year-old boy. He recounted his visit and said that although the time he spent with them was a somber one, he just wanted to be someone they could talk to and share some smiles with during their grief.
"It was just an emotional time," Cruz said. "I spent a little bit of time with them. We got to smile a little bit, which was good for them. It was a time where I just wanted to be a positive voice, a positive light in the tunnel where it can really be negative, so it was a good time. They are a great family and they're really united at this time and it was good to see."
Cruz, who was humbled that the family decided to bury Jack in Cruz' jersey, drove to Newtown, Connecticut, with his girlfriend, Elaina Watley, and their daughter Kennedy. Since the school shooting on Friday morning that left 26 people dead, Cruz said that he's been spending extra time with his daughter and cherishing each moment he has with her noting that "you never know when that can be taken from you."
"You never go through some circumstances like this and circumstances where a kid faces or a family faces something of this magnitude at their school," Cruz said of the visit. "This definitely was the toughest by far."
