White House Releases Photos of the First Family in Africa

The Flickr set shows the family visiting Nelson Mandela's prison cell.

Published July 23, 2013

The White House has just added new photos of the first family onto their Flickr account including a few personal ones from their trip to Africa.

In one shot, President Barack Obama and daughter Sasha share a hug while standing in what used to be former South African President Nelson Mandela's prison cell. First Lady Michelle Obama and their eldest daughter, Malia, are also in the small room as former prisoner Ahmed Kathrada gives them a tour of the Robben Island Prison in Cape Town, South Africa.

In another photo, the president looks pensive as he stares out a window during a tour of the Maison des Esclaves Museum on Gorée Island, Senegal.

But not all the images are somber as some capture the president goofing around with children and laughing with his staff members.
