For its September issue, Ebony magazine has decided to step away from the typical fashion stories that will be filling the newsstands and instead honor the late Trayvon Martin. Three different covers spotlight famous fathers with their sons while dressed in gray hoodies and a special fourth cover for subscribers featues Martin's own family.
"As a mother of a young Black boy, the tragedy of Travyon Martin affected me deeply. We simply cannot allow the conversations on this issue to come to a standstill," Editor-in-Chief Amy Barnett writes in a statement about the issue. "As the leading source for an authoritative perspective on the African American community, at EBONY we are committed to serving as a hub for Black America to explore solutions, and to giving readers the information and tools they need to help ensure a bright future for all of our children."
Boris Kodjoe and his son Nicolas, Dwyane Wade with sons Zaire and Zion, and Spike Lee with his son Jackson each pose on individual covers with the words "We Are Trayvon." Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin and Jahvaris Fulton cover a special fourth cover for subscribers. Inside, Bishop T.D. Jakes shares a prayer for healing, Jill Scott pens a poem for Trayvon, information on the state of "Stand Your Ground" laws and the stories of young Black men across America fill the tribute issue.
