Dwyane Wade Says He Wanted Engagement Ring to "Speak for Itself"

The NBA star also calls Gabrielle Union’s new bling “timeless.”

When it comes to engagement rings, it seems bigger is better, at least when it comes to our favorite stars. But that doesn’t mean showing some restraint is a bad thing. Just ask NBA star Dwyane Wade.

Speaking with the Associated Press, the Miami Heat point guard, who proposed to longtime love Gabrielle Union with an 8.5 carat diamond over the weekend, says his focus was to find a ring that fit the actress’ understated, yet elegant style.

"I kind of know my lady. I know she's simple, but at the same time, I just wanted the rock to kind of speak for itself and not do too much with the diamonds. I think it's a simple ring, but it's nice. It was nicely done ... it's timeless," he said.

We’d have to agree with him there. It’s definitely a rock for the ages!

But we’d hardly call the actress’ new sparkler simple. Designed by jeweler-to-the-stars Jason of Beverly Hills and valued at $1 million, the ring features a stunning cushion-cut center stone atop an unadorned platinum band. Wade reportedly spent months searching out the perfect piece for his leading lady, and it looks like she approves.

“Maaaaaannn… I’m floatin! Thank you SO much for all the love, well wishes & support!” the Being Mary Jane star tweeted to fans following the engagement announcement.

The couple has been together since 2009. It will be the second marriage for both stars.
