Taraji P. Henson gets as much attention for her slammin' body as she does for Cookie Lyon's one-liners, and now her trainer is sharing exactly how she gets that toned physique: the Cookie Booty workout.
“We specialize in shaping her body, particularly her glutes,” Henson's personal trainer, Mike T, tells People magazine. “We do the ‘Cookie Booty’ workout. It’s a lot of lunges, a lot of squats, and a lot of leg presses to get that round derriere.”
Henson claims she didn't know a kettle bell from a tea kettle when she first starting working with Mike T just before she began filming for Empire, but she has made a lot of progress in a few short months. “She’s very committed to the gym,” says Mike. “Taraji is very focused and very disciplined. She’s the type of person that if you tell her she can’t do something, she’ll do it even harder.”
In addition to their booty workouts, which Mike will be sharing on the online training platform TrainersVault, he also has Henson do an hour to an hour and 20 minutes of walking at a medium pace for her cardio work, and mixes in lots of shoulder and back workouts too.
“We do a lot of building and shaping along with toning, which consists of high repetitions with lighter weights,” he says. "A lot of women have a misconception that if you work out and use weights, you’re going to get bulky and build big muscles. It’s not true.”
But Cookie's body isn't just built in the gym. Besides training seven days a week, when she's not filming, Henson follows a super-strict raw food diet.
"It’s really changed her body tremendously," says Mike. "When you get older, you want to change your body from the inside out. Eating healthy from a conscious standpoint is beneficial in long-term health, and she definitely has that conscious mindset."
