Jennifer Hudson Talks Tragedy and Triumph

In an interview with 20/20, the singer opens up about her music, her new addition and the murders of her family members.

Jennifer Hudson’s new album, I Remember Me, will be released tomorrow, March 22, and the Oscar-winning actress has been speaking to the media in support of it. Over the weekend, 20/20 aired an exclusive interview that the singer did with Deborah Roberts where she spoke about many things, including the tragedy she faced back in 2008 when she lost her mother, brother and nephew to murder.

Jennifer got teary-eyed when she talked about it. “I would have to say God is what I feel certain about … because no matter what He’s always there. Always. Because that’s the thing that keeps me. And I feel like that is the greatest gift that my mother—no money, no fame, no nothing—could give. I could not and would not be sitting here right now, this happy, talking to you, without Him,” Jennifer said, as her voice cracked.

“I have the great sadness to be sad over, but then look at the joy that I have too,” said J-Hud, referring to her son. “He’s so sweet. He loves to dance. He loves music. If my Weight Watchers commercial comes on, he tells me, ‘Mama, that’s my mama.”

When talking about her son, Jennifer remembered her own mother. “She was the perfect mother in every way."
