At Sunday's VMAs, news of Beyoncé pregnancy sent Twitter into a frenzy, causing the site to receive more tweets per second than at any point in its history. Shortly after the pop star's performance of the song "Love On Top," the conclusion of which involved her opening up her vest and flashing a big grin while rubbing her belly, Twitter users fired off a total of 8,868 tweets per second, setting a new record.
Previously, the most tweets per second had been observed during the final minutes of the World Cup match between the U.S. and Japanese women's soccer teams. That event engendered 7,196 TPS.
This year's VMAs, which featured other memorable appearances such as Jay-Z and Kanye West's live debut as The Throne and Lady Gaga performing in drag, saw a record online viewership in general. Over two million viewers tuned in to stream the show.
