Ciara has a curious new marketing strategy for her eponymous fifth studio album. The #Csquad and casual listeners can now get Ciara along with Playlist: The Very Best of Ciara for $13.99 via Groupon.
When the news broke, many likened it to a virtual version of the sales bin, where retailers usually send slow-moving units, and took to Twitter in an attempt to decipher the move. "I'm pretty sure Ciara's Groupon deal has little to do with money... I think she just wants to sell units... *shrugs*," wrote Twitter user @CeCeOlisa. "A poor man's Samsung deal?" asked @est_1980.
Comedian Lil Duval, who started a mini-tweet war with the Grammy winner back in 2010, kept it light with a "lmao."
All this despite the album, which was led by singles with her boyfriend, Future ("Body Party"), and Nicki Minaj ("I'm Out" still a No. 1 on 106 & Park), debuting at the No. 2 spot on Billboard's 200 earlier this month (July 5), and pushing a respectable 59,000 in first week sales (Her fourth top 3 opening and a considerable jump from 2010's Basic Instinct, which debuted at No. 44 with 37,000 in first week sales.)
It seems success must also be one of those things defined in the eye of the beholder. *shrugs back*
