A former police officer says he knows what Tupac Shakur's final words were as he lay dying on the Las Vegas strip. Chris Carroll, a retired cop from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, claims Shakur told him "F--k you" moments before he slipped into unconsciousness and later died.

Carroll shared the story with his cousin for The now-retired officer was on bike patrol on the night of Sept. 7, 1996, when he got a call to head over to a shooting scene. His version of events have never been in the press but according to Carroll, he pulled Pac out of Suge Knight's BMW after he was hit in a drive-by. "The guy inside came right out, like he was leaning against the door," he recalled. "And at first I thought the guy was going to bust out of the door right on top of me; I thought this was his plan of attack, so to speak. But then I notice that he's not coming out of the door; he was falling out of it. So I grabbed him with my left arm and he falls into me, and I've still got my gun in the other hand. He's covered with blood, and I immediately notice that the guy's got a ton of gold on — a necklace and other jewelry — and all of the gold is covered in blood. That has always left an image in my mind."

Another bike cop showed up to the scene and helped keep Knight (who Carroll says was "somewhat of a threat") back while he tended to Pac. At one point, the Death Row Records founder was yelling, "Pac! Pac!" and Carroll finally realized that he was helping a rap star. He continued to try and get answers from Shakur, who was by that time trying to respond to Knight calling his name. "He went from fighting to 'I can’t do it,'" said Carroll. "And when he made that transition, he looked at me, and he's looking right in my eyes. And that's when I looked at him and said one more time, 'Who shot you?'...He looked at me and he took a breath to get the words out, and he opened his mouth, and I thought I was actually going to get some cooperation. And then the words came out: 'F--k you.'

After uttering the expletive, he started "gurgling and slipping out of consciousness," Carroll added. By the time an ambulance showed up, Shakur was completely unconscious.

Shakur sustained several gunshot wounds, including shots to the chest and pelvis and one bullet that punctured his lung. The 25-year-old was taken to Nevada's University Medical Center and placed on life support. After close to a week in the hospital, Shakur died of internal bleeding on Sept. 13, 1996.
