DJ Mustard Wants a John Mayer Collaboration

Roc Nation producer says "Waiting on the World to Change" singer is "hard as s--t."

When listeners hear the now ubiquitous "Mustard on the beat" ID, they know that track was hand-crafted by none other than DJ Mustard. But for all his hit collaborations, the L.A.-born Roc Nation producer said there's one artist he would love to connect with in the studio.

"I think John Mayer is hard as s--t and I want to do something with him one day," the "Rack City" producer told just before hitting the stage with fellow West Coast rising star YG. "I just remember seeing him play at the Michael Jackson funeral and that s--t was just crazy."

Mustard is credited by many as the creator of "Ratchet," but his recent hits, like Kid Ink's "Show Me" and B.o.B's "Headband," have shown his range. And although Mayer might be a stretch in the minds of some, the confident 23-year-old says he won't force a pop record.

"I feel like everything should happen organically," he said. "If I ever do meet John Mayer and we end up in the studio hopefully he'll bring the guitar and I'll make a beat to it or something ... I'm not going to ever force myself to do something that doesn't happen naturally 'cause then you're just getting your hopes up and creating unrealistic expectations. I like everything to happen organically."

In addition to Mayer, Mustard revealed, he has his ear to one of his contemporaries out of Chicago, the man behind the "I Don't Like" beat.

"I feel like Young Chop in the next year or so is ready to take over," Mustard said. "Chief Keef and Chop [came up] together, just 'cause Chief Keef stopped didn't mean Chop stopped. You just gotta really work for what you want and Chop got [what it takes]."

What does it take? "The producer game is different," Mustard exclaimed. "You gotta really be versatile, and I think Chop is one of those dudes that can do stuff that a lot of people can't. I look up to Chop in some type of ways, not just cause that's my homie, but he's a dope producer and I feel like he's got the potential to be one of the greats."
