There's something very suspicious going on with Nas and a mysterious rapper by the name of Your Old Droog, who happens to sound like the lauded Queens MC.
Some reports say that Droog is actually just Nas –– who has gone by "Nasty Nas" "Escobar" and "Nastradomous" over the years –– rapping under a new moniker. However, according to Complex, and hip hop blog Nah Right, Nas and Droog aren't the same person. People from both outlets claim to have met the elusive spitter, allegedly hailing from Brooklyn.
A writer from Complex says he met Droog three times, beginning in 2012 at New York University's radio station 89.1 WNYU. They met again in December 2013, when Droog was going by the name Invisible Droog, and yet again in January of this year.
Droog dropped a self-titled EP last week that is now bending ears because of the vocals and musical stylings that sound like Nas. One song in particular, "Gunsmoke Cologne," features drum patterns, horns and piano strings similar to the sounds that have attracted Nas's ear in the past (for example, the song "Seykou Story" off Street's Disciple uses similar instruments although the beat pattern is different). Lyrically though, "Gunsmoke Cologne" sounds more like a new school rapper than a skilled veteran.
More evidence pointing to Droog being a different person is the "01 Quiet Storm" interlude that doesn't sound like Nas at all, yet the sound has clearly been manipulated to give a slowed-down effect. There are also may be a clue hidden in the title "Quiet Storm," which happens to be one of Mobb Deep's biggest songs. Mobb Deep reps Queensbridge, just like Nas and has had a storied past with God's Son.
Then there's the possibility that Droog is maybe paying homage to the 40-year-old with his flows, or maybe wanted to get more attention for the project because of the Nas angle.
Either that, or he just can't help the fact that they sound alike.
