There’s no hard deadline for Usher’s upcoming eighth studio release, UR. The album “is not scheduled anymore” in order for Usher to move a little slower with the creative process, he told Billboard.com.
“‘I’ve basically taken it back. I'm taking my time with it," said Usher. "At the end of the day, all of this is just about having fun. You get in the studio [and] go with how you feel."
A part of “having fun” in the studio, is not locking down a specific theme. “I work on 40-50 songs in making an album," explained the Grammy winner. "I haven’t finished the album enough to tell you what I'm talking about."
Artists featured on UR include Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Drake, Skrillex and Chris Brown. The latter collaboration follows Usher's feature on Brown's single “New Flame,” which will appear on Breezy’s new album. “There is another record that we worked on for the [UR] album,” he revealed. “The relationship is great... we’ve been able to build.”
UR is a “different take” from older work, according to the 35-year-old father of two. “It’s something that feels very modern, but the vocal on it feels very specific to my style. I wanted to do something that I felt like would be current, but wouldn’t necessarily conform specifically.”
Come November, Usher will be hitting the road for the UR Experience tour, launching in Montreal, on Nov. 1 with opener August Alsina. Like he did in bringing Trey Songz out on tour before, Usher is giving younger talent a chance to shine on stage. "I always thought of that opening spot as the place for the person that I can can give an experience they haven’t had before.”
