Childish Gambino: I'm Better Than Drake

Rapper says he works harder than October's Own.

After name checkin' him during a freestyle in Australia, Childish Gambino has more strong words for Drake. The “3005” rapper says that he’s a better rapper than the Toronto native solely based on their work practices.

“I don’t want people to think I hate Drake” he explained to Peter Rosenberg during a Q&A at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater Monday (Sept. 15). "I don't hate Drake at all. I really like Drake, if no for no other reason than he makes me better. He really does."

Gambino’s preoccupation with Drizzy doesn’t come from a negative place, he appreciates what October’s Own represents for his own career. “I had to fight that all the time. I knew when I was doing Childish Gambino from the beginning, like, ‘They’re not gonna let me do this. They already have a rapper/singer/actor guy who’s Black,’" he recalled. "That’s really what it was. ‘If he was White, it would be different.’ They’d be like, ‘They’re not the same.’ It’s very specific. I don’t dislike Drake. I think he’s a really good writer and rapper. Right now I definitely feel I’m better than him, only because I’m working harder than him right now. If he came in and was like, ‘Let’s rap.’ I’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna kill you.’ [Laughs] But, right now. Maybe he’s got something up his sleeve.”

Besides his Drake chat, Gambino treated the audience to a live performance of “Sober,” off his upcoming mixtape, STN MTN / KAUAI is your #1 source for Black celebrity news, photos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
