We’re a couple of weeks away until Kendrick Lamar unveils his next crowning jewel but the Compton MC and his Top Dawg Entertainment cohort Jay Rock are still spreading that Black Hippy love. Recently sitting down with Beats by Dre, the West Coast titans gave an inside look at the making of Rock’s “Pay for It” and the inspiration behind the motivational track.
Featured in Beats by Dre’s latest commercial with Serena Williams and LeBron James, the “The Blacker the Berry” MC revealed, “I can’t really get into the studio without being inspired by something. Serena come from the same city that I come from so I know the pain that she feels. I know the loss that she has and that was my approach on the record. You got to pull from that. You got to pull from everything that you hate about yourself, everything that you hate about where you come from and turn it into something positive.”
Produced by Sounwave, the aggressive mantra also instills hope and encourages you to embrace that I-have-to-win at all costs attitude. The “Money Trees” co-spitter added, “It’s about overcoming trials and tribulations. ‘Cause where I come from, I’m from the city of Watts in the Eastside from out the projects, where it’s like you are a product of your environment. So basically that’s what it’s about, surviving and overcoming. I was in the streets battling with that like. 'What do I want to do? Do you want to be in these streets or do music?' So instead of going out and flip birds, I’m gon' flip these words.”
Jay Rock released “Pay for It” last year on iTunes, which fit perfect with Beats’ ad campaign. Expected to also be featured on his next solo project, he and Kendrick added, “The song feel like the commercial. When you see the pain on their face, we have that same depth in the verses that we laid down. Everything is the same as far as the streets to the music and to sports because everybody is striving to be the best.”
