UPDATE: Vic Mensa went on the record about Roc Nation in his first interview since his new deal was announced. The Chicago native talked signing to The Roc, admiring Jay Z, music, and more, in an interview with Power 106’s Justine Credible.
According to Mensa, Roc Nation executive Lenny Santiago got the ball rolling on the deal by connecting him with Jay. The21-year-old rapper met his idol for the first time last May, the same day as the Met Ball elevator incident between Hov and Solange.
But besides Jay’s influence, Mensa is excited to call Roc Nation home. “I got a lot of faith and belief in how they do things at Roc Nation. Just being with a company like that— more than just a company— being with people that are innovators.”
Chicago’s own Vic Mensa is the down with the Roc Nation squad.
As reported by Miss Info, the “U Mad” rapper was officially announced as the newest signee via tweets from Roc Nation and Jay Z (yes, Hov actually tweeted!) this afternoon. Chicago hip hop blog Fake Shore Drive got an early lead on the rumor before official confirmation came down from King Hova.
Mensa joined in the Twitter announcements with his own post, reading, “Savemoney Roc Boys,” in reference to his hip hop collective.
The 21-year-old is among a new crop of budding rap talents Chicago has been known to produce, and Mensa already has two heaters in rotation at the moment. Beyond “U Mad," which features Kanye West, he can also be heard on Yeezy's “All Day” single.
