John Legend Will Oversee Music for New Series Underground

The Oscar winner will also executive produce the WGN America project.

John Legend is taking his musical prowess to TV! The Associated Press reports that the Oscar-winning musician is confirmed to score and produce the soundtrack of the upcoming slavery-themed television drama Underground.

WGN America will produce and air the series that will follow the lives of Southern slaves as they fight for freedom. Underground is currently in production in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and stars Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) as the organizer of an escape effort by plantation slaves. Other big names involved in the project include Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Temptation) and Christopher Meloni (Law & Order).

WGN America also reportedly revealed during a meeting with the Television Critics Association that the "Glory" singer's company, Get Lifted, will also executive produce the drama.

Legend confirmed his involvement in a statement, adding that he believes the story of people brave enough to risk everything for freedom will be inspirational.

Underground will air on WGN America in 2016.
