Sia Furler dropped “Reaper” today (January 7). It’s further proof that the Australian songstress has the pipes of a church organ as she gears up to release her forthcoming album, This Is Acting.
Kanye West co-produced the track that was supposedly for Rihanna’s album Anti, however it isn’t misaligned with Sia’s past work as it assumes the tone of singles she’s already released. "You came to take me away,” she yells out on the track’s chorus. “So close I was to heaven's gates / But no baby, no baby not today."
While ‘Ye was behind the production and even some of the songwriting elements of “Reaper,” Sia recently told Rolling Stone that he did not show up to the writing sessions with her. She also says Rihanna didn’t either, even though the song was meant for her album.
"They'll entice me into a session by saying, 'Rihanna will definitely be there' or 'Kanye will definitely be there,' but it's hilarious because I turn up and, almost always, they never come," she recalled. "I remember I just raced in and raced out, and I thought there was something about the chorus that seemed fun about this song, but I never thought it would see the light of day."
Sia’s latest is her second collaboration with Kanye West. Early last year West debuted “Wolves,” which featured her and Vic Mensa during his Yeezy Boosts live-stream. The trio also performed the song during the SNL 40 special, but a studio version has never officially surfaced. This Is Acting is slated for release on January 29.
