A young Asian woman who may have been trying to get out of jury duty in New York City now gets to serve every single day.
In her jurors’ questionnaire, she wrote that “African-Americans, Hispanics and Haitians” are the three people she admires the least. If she was trying to get out of jury duty it didn't work, but she brought a little bit of drama for those present.
According to reports, the potential juror wrote that she has a family member in a Chinese gang. To which Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis asked, “Why didn’t you put ‘Asians’ down also?”
She responded, “Maybe I should have.”
Then the fireworks started when the judge said: “This is an outrage, and so are you!”
She was excused, but he ordered her to return to court every day.
Is she racist or was she trying to place the race card to get out of jury duty? Only she knows, and she’ll have a nice long time to think about it, thanks to Judge Garaufis.
Have you ever filled out your jury questionnaire incorrectly to get out of jury duty?
