A suspect has been arrested and charged with the murder of Zurana Horton, a 34-year-old mother of 12, who was shot fatally last Friday while trying to shield a group of neighborhood children from gang gunfire as they left a public school, The New York Daily News reports. A second mother and an 11-year-old girl were also wounded in the attack.

Andrew Lopez, 18, a former drug dealer and member of the local 8 Block gang, told police on Tuesday that his intended targets were the Young Goons, a rival gang his crew had engaged with moments before the shooting. Police say that Lopez went to the roof of his apartment building in the Brownsville area of Brooklyn, New York, and opened fire as children headed home from Public School 298. Police recovered a dozen 9-mm. shell casings on the building's roof and the sidewalk below.

"It's a shame, just a shame," Horton's devastated mother, Denise Peace, told the Daily News. "I'm so glad they found the guys who did it. I hope they get everything they deserve."

Lopez’s half-brothers Kristian Lopez, 17, and Jonathan Carrasquillo, 22, were also arrested. Andrew Lopez and Carrasquillo were charged with murder, two counts of assault, reckless endangerment and weapons possession. Kristian Lopez was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon — a baseball bat — according to police.
