Anthony Dewayne Ware, a Tuscaloosa, Ala., resident collapsed after police pepper sprayed and handcuffed him Friday night. Police were responding to a call reporting that Ware was sitting in front of a residence with a gun, according to MyFoxAl.com.
Ware ran into the woods nearby after police arrived. Once authorities caught up to him, a struggle followed and Ware resisted arrest. Tuscaloosa police pepper-sprayed Ware and placed him in handcuffs. Ware collapsed as authorities were taking him out of the woods. After officers performed CPR on Ware, he was taken to a nearby medical facility and pronounced dead after arrival.
"We've used OC spray for many years. You know everybody reacts different to that substance, but it's used across the United States in many different police departments. And this is very uncommon for that substance to cause any kind of harm like that. Normally it's a temporary effect," Sgt. Brent Blankley said, according to MyFoxAl.com.
The Tuscaloosa police department is investigating why the 35-year-old died suddenly.
