Did you know that there were only nine days this year that police have not killed a citizen in America? Organizers have been working tirelessly through protests and in policy to push back against these fatal policing methods.
Young activists Johnetta "Netta" Elzie, Deray McKesson, Brittany Packnett and Samuel Sinyangwe have launched Campaign Zero, a list of 10 solutions backed by data from researchers, community demands and the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, to end police violence in America.
"Campaign ZERO was developed with contributions from activists, protesters and researchers across the nation," the site states.
Some of the solutions outlined include pulling back on the enforcement on crimes such as drug possession, sleeping in the park and also racial profiling. Amid law enforcement's response to protests in Ferguson with tear gas and military vehicles, Campaign ZERO is calling for the federal government to end the 1033 Program that provides military weapons to local police departments.
The following are a full list of the demands of Campaign ZERO:
1) Putting an End to Broken Windows Policy
2) Community Oversight
3) Limit Use of Force
4) Independently Investigate and Prosecute
5) Community Representation
6) Body Cams/Film the Police
8) End For-Profit Policing
10) Fair Police Union Contracts
