Alabama Cop Charged With Murder for Shooting Unarmed Black Man Thinks He's the Victim

AC Smith's lawyer says he will not be "sacrificed on the altar of political correctness."

Aaron Smith, a white 23-year-old Alabama police officer, has been charged with murdering an unarmed Black man when he shot Greg Gunn, a 59-year-old-man, just yards from his own front door. The most terrifying aspect of this latest police killing is that Smith thinks that he’s the victim.

After the killing, which took place early into the morning last Thursday, Smith was detained and placed in custody.

Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey called the shooting an “isolated incident,” adding he will not tolerate law enforcement officers acting outside the law. Authorities initially deemed that Gunn was seen as suspicious because he was holding “a stick,” but a neighbor of Gunn’s told the AP that the stick was the extension handle of a paint roller.

On Wednesday, Smith’s lawyer Mickey McDermott lashed out at the indictment when speaking to a local reporter. “He will not be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness,” McDermott said, adding that his client has been receiving death threats. McDermott also question why Smith was being charged immediately as opposed to being sent to a grand jury.

While McDermott perhaps had hoped that his client would receive the same sympathetic treatment that other officers who have murdered Black folks got from a grand jury ruling, it appears that Smith will be charged with murder and hopefully sent to prison for his crime.

Recently, presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders sat down with BET to discuss the epidemic of police violence against Black communities:
