According to Traci Andracke, her young daughter Brooklyn's favorite day of the week is garbage day, when she gets to wave to the local collector, Delvar Dopson. Earlier this month, Brooklyn finally got to meet her hero and the story is going viral for all the right reasons.
Traci took to Facebook a couple of weeks ago explaining her daughter's affinity for the big garbage truck, and the man inside. "For about a year now, Brooklyn has anxiously awaited the garbage truck's arrival at our house. It started with waving from the window, then we had to be outside to wave, and when we missed the truck driving by our house, I'd drive around the neighborhood to find the garbage truck and wave," she wrote.
The stars aligned for Brooklyn's recent birthday, which landed on a Thursday. Both Brooklyn's day and Dopson's was made quite a bit more special. The little girl got her birthday wish when she was able to give Dopson a homemade cupcake.
Andracke wrote on Facebook to recount the story. "When he came down our street, Brooklyn ran to the corner," she wrote. "We were waving like usual and I motioned for him to come over by us. He pulled over, got out and gave us his BIG smile. Brooklyn was instantly speechless as she handed him the cupcake."
Dopson and Andracke spoke while little Brooklyn was in shock. "He said he doesn't have any kids of his own, but he mentors several children and just loves them. I can't believe that I never got his name, so for now he will continue to be 'our favorite awesome smiley garbage man,'" Andracke reported happily.
Brooklyn was uncharacteristically silent on the way to daycare that day, and when Traci asked why, she said her daughter responded, "Mommy, I'm just so happy."
Traci took to Facebook one more time to thank Dopson when she learned her name, "It may be a little thing that you do, but it means so much to us! Thank you Delvar, for your kindness and your service to the city!"
If only everyone was as gracious and kind as young Brooklyn!
