As details continue to unravel following the Orlando shooting, more information about the shooter, Omar Mateed, is beginning to surface.
Now, Mateed’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, has spoken publicly about her experience being married to him. In speaking of her marriage with Mateen, Yusufiy has said, “I had let that chapter of my life go a long time ago. It’s somebody that hurt me and traumatized me.”
Yusufiy was asked by the F.B.I. to detail specific accounts in their marriage; Yusufiy reveals much of the emotional and physical abuse she experienced. Yusufiy immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2000. She grew up in northern New Jersey.
She met Mr. Mateen, and due to the pressure that she felt from her parents to get married, she moved down to Florida after just a few dates with him. She said that at first, he seemed pretty normal, but after about six weeks of living with him, she noticed changes in his behavior.
He did not allow her to talk to her parents on the phone and he forced her to give him her paychecks. Then, his anger manifested in more of a physical manner. She recalled, “He was totally two different people sometimes, and would turn and abuse [her], out of nowhere, when [she] was sleeping.”
She also admitted that he had outwardly spoken of his dislike of homosexuals. He kept a silver handgun and Yusufiy felt very unsafe. After reaching out to her parents and discussing her safety, Yusufiy was able to flee. Her parents helped her to end her marriage and come back to New Jersey.
The last time she ever heard from him was last year when he attempted to message her on Facebook. She had since blocked him from contacting her.
