New York City police officers saved a nearly nude woman from a suicide attempt on Saturday morning. The unidentified woman jumped from the fifth floor of her Bronx apartment building. After she jumped, she fell on top of an air-conditioning unit just two floors below, where cops were able to successfully pull her back into the building.
Early Saturday morning Dahiana Rosario saw her neighbor, unclothed and in distress, prepare to jump from her window. She noticed the woman’s mother holding her back. Eventually the mother of the suicidal woman lost hold of her daughter and the woman fell on top of an AC unit.
She sat on the air conditioner for a while as she spoke in both English and Spanish.
“She was saying that God is coming and everybody has to be better people, and we have to love each other,” Rosario, 31, said. “She was saying God loves us . . . and God loves everybody . . . and clean your house of bad things, bad energy.”
Eventually other neighbors phoned the police, who arrived on the scene shortly after. As the rescuers attempted to pull the woman back in, she tried to fight them off. Members of the community placed pillows and other soft objects on the ground just in case the woman fell.
The responding officers were able to safely pull the woman back inside. When inside, officers clothed the woman and strapped her onto a stretcher.
She was later taken to North Central Bronx Hospital, where she received a psychiatric evaluation.
