Chicago police fatally shot Kajuan Raye Wednesday night. Now, the community wants answers.
The CPD claim the police sergeant who killed Raye was shot at twice while he pursued him in a foot chase. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting though that the Cook County medical examiner’s office said the 19-year-old man died from a gunshot wound to his back. Additionally, law enforcement hasn’t been able to produce the gun they claim Raye supposedly used in the violent encounter.
Raye’s death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office. Family and members of Raye’s community are reacting to his death. Karonisha Ramsey, his mother, said her son was in an unfamiliar neighborhood with friends. Subsequently, she claims police pulled up on him.
“Next thing you know, all he heard is gunshots,” Raye said. “It happened real quick.” She also says she doesn’t know if her son was armed and is pursuing a lawsuit over his death.
Chicago’s NBC5 obtained video of what happened right before the shooting. Raye is seen running from the police, however the fatal shots that killed him were not captured on the area’s surveillance.
Ramsey, in speaking with the Sun-Times, says her son recently moved back to Chicago from Texas after moving in with his aunt and grandmother. “I just wanted to put him in a different environment,” Ramsey told the newspaper. “He had perfect attendance (in high school), he just wasn’t doing the work.”
