A young mother from an East New York community died from a gunshot wound to the buttocks, reported the New York Daily News. On Wednesday morning, Salaya Figueroa, 27, was fatally shot in the buttocks when random gunfire occurred outside the Louis Pink Houses, a local housing project, said the NYPD.
Paramedics arrived on the scene around 12:42 a.m.; however, upon examining Figueroa, they were unable to initially find her gunshot wound. During this time, Figueroa was in and out of consciousness, a source told the Daily News.
When they eventually put Figueroa in an ambulance for transport to the hospital, paramedics were able to locate the wound. They reached Brookdale University Hospital at 12:58 a.m.
Figueroa arrived in serious condition and allegedly died while waiting for a CAT scan at Brookdale University Hospital. Around 2:50 a.m. Figueroa’s time of death was declared.
Although paramedics claimed they could not at first find a wound, NYPD officials said that it was obvious at first sight, reported Brownsville Patch.
"She was amazing," Figueroa's sister, Jada Ha,rris told Brooklyn News 12, choking back tears. "She truly will be missed. She's leaving her three kids behind, and it's sad. Like, three kids!"
The victim's loved ones placed candles in her honor at the site where she was killed.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation into Figueroa's death is ongoing, according to the NYPD. It's unknown whether Figueroa or her boyfriend — who was with her at the time of the shooting — were targeted by the shooter, the NYPD said.
