After his friend was tragically killed last week, 20-year-old Malik Cooper was determined to be there for him one last time and serve as pallbearer at the funeral. However, a devastating car accident took Malik’s life before he made it to the service, said police.

Malik was a student at Tuskegee University and was determined to make the drive to Atlanta, even though the roads were wet and slippery due to bad weather. On Sunday, he drove down Highway 85 in Alabama when his car flipped off the road.

Police say Malik was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

“It just hurt me to my heart like someone came and ripped my heart away,” his mother, Bridget Grimes, told Channel 2.

  1. Malik was going to be a pallbearer at the funeral of 15-year-old Marquez Montgomery, who was shot in the head by his cousin Dontavious Montgomery in November
  2. Friends and family have posted their condolences to social media. Malik's mother, Bridget Grimes, gave a warning to young drivers on Channel 2: 'Put your seat belt on, get off that Facetime and trying to chat with your friends and pay attention to the roads'
  3. A GoFundMe has been set up by Malik's family to raise money for funeral services
