The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport tweeted the shooting took place at a baggage claim inside Terminal 2, reported NBC News.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, people were reportedly running in the airport. Once officials could contain passengers, they were held on the tarmac while the search for the gunman occurred. The Federal Aviation Administration did not immediately order an official ground stop at the airport; however, officials were not letting anyone inside.
It was first reported that only one person was killed in the shooting, but five people have been reported dead, according to Time.
Police believe the shooter acted alone.
