For those unfamiliar with Jeffrey Lord, he is a conservative CNN panelist who has recently gained more notoriety for his defend-Trump-at-all-costs approach. In a few instances, he can be pushed to offer a begrudging statement of disapproval, worded just perfectly. However, more often than not, Lord stands with Trump no matter how lonely the path.
On Thursday morning, Lord appeared on CNN's New Day, where he made a remark he surely did not foresee resulting in his name trending on Twitter for all of Thursday.
During the conversation centered around health care, Lord controversially compared Donald Trump's approach to health care to the tactics of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“I want to say something here that will probably drive Symone crazy,” Lord teased to Sanders, who never shies away from speaking out against racial injustice and bias in the country. “Think of President Trump as the Martin Luther King of health care. When I was a kid, President Kennedy did not want to introduce the civil rights bill because he said it wasn’t popular, he didn’t have the votes for it, etcetera. Dr. King kept putting people in the streets in harm’s way to put the pressure on so that the bill would be introduced. That’s what finally worked.”
Lord's backlash did not end with angry tweets. Throughout the rest of the day, Lord appeared on CNN where he doubled down on his MLK remarks.
Don Lemon attempted to reason with Lord so he'd understand how his comments conflating Martin Luther King and Donald Trump angered many people, specifically people of color. However, when Lemon and Sanders spoke about the reality of racial injustice in the country, Lord answered by claiming there is no such thing as Black Americans, just Americans.
