Bethune-Cookman Students Loudly Boo and Turn Their Backs on Betsy Devos During Commencement Speech

The HBCU's president told students to "choose which way you want to go."

  1. During Wednesday's Bethune-Cookman University Commencement, angry seniors booed guest speaker Betsy Devos
  2. As the education secretary spoke, students rose and turned their backs
  3. Eventually, the school's president, Edison Jackson, stopped her to warn students to be respectful

    When Jackson stepped in, he told students degrees would be mailed out if their behavior did not cease. 

    "Choose which way you want to go," he said, reported Business Insider. 

    Devos then continued her speech by saying the Trump administration will fight for Pell Grants for HBCUs.

    "We support you and we will continue to support you," she said.

    Devos has often come under fire when it comes to her understanding of HBCUs. The Education Secretary was criticized for comparing the creation of historically Black institutions to school choice.
