Authorities investigating the murder of Nabra Hassanen may have reason to believe the Muslim teen was raped before she was killed. According to The Daily Beast, sources close to the case said police found a pair of women’s underwear near the body of the slain 17-year-old.
When asked if Hassanen was raped at a press conference on Monday, Fairfax County Police Department Lt. Col. Deputy Chief of Police Tom Ryan said, “There was an assault that occurred in Fairfax County and we had another assault that occurred in Loudoun County.”
Investigators are still awaiting lab test results from vaginal swabs before they make a definitive statement as to whether or not Hassanen was sexually assaulted.
On Sunday, Hassanen and friends were reportedly walking back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, Virginia, when one of the friends engaged in an argument with motorist Darwin Martinez Torres, 22.
One boy in the group allegedly threw a drink at Torres’s vehicle, which prompted him to drive his vehicle on the curb and chase the group with a metal baseball bat. While running away, Hassanen tripped, which allowed Torres to catch up to her and strike her in the head, according to witnesses.
Torres then allegedly dragged her body to his vehicle and drove to another location, where police suspect he raped her.
Torres is being held in Fairfax County jail. Because Torres, a national of El Salvador, entered the United States illegally, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has asked to take custody of Torres after he’s released from Fairfax County jail, ICE spokesperson Carissa Cutrell told The Daily Beast.
