Police have arrested and charged a Maryland man with murder after it was determined his missing, pregnant girlfriend was killed from a shotgun wound to the head.

Tyler Tessier, 32, was charged with first degree murder on Wednesday for the killing of high school teacher Laura Wallen, 31, who was four months pregnant, CBS Baltimore reports.

Although Tessier and Wallen dated, he was engaged to another woman. He also pretended to be Wallen and sent text messages to her sister where he claimed he wasn’t the father of her baby. In one of the texts, Tessier claimed Wallen’s previous boyfriend, Antoine, was the father. However, in the text, Tessier incorrectly spelled the man’s name to read “Antwan,” which led to doubts about the legitimacy of the texts, reported DailyMail.com.

Wallen was reported missing on September 5 when she didn’t show up for the first day of school at Wilde Lake High School in Howard County. On September 13, police found Wallen's remains in a shallow grave in Damascus, Maryland.

Laura Wallen's father, Mark Wallen, said after a bail hearing Thursday for Tessier that the suspect "is a monster. He's a liar."

Tessier is being held without bail.
