Viral Post About Young Mother Making Her 5-Year-Old Pay Rent Has Some Calling Her Mom Of The Year And Others Slamming Her Parenting Skills

Here's what Essence Evans has to say about teaching financial responsibility early.

A Georgia mother’s viral Facebook post about teaching her 5-year-old daughter how finances work in the real world is receiving mixed reviews.

On her post — which has since been deleted — Essence Evans said she makes her young daughter pay most of her allowance in rent, reported KTLA.

Evans said she gives her daughter a $7 allowance; however, she makes her pay most of that back for rent and utilities in order to learn how people in the real world spend the majority of their wages on bills.

“I make her give me $5 dollars back,” Evans wrote. “$1 for rent $1 for water $1 for electricity $1 for cable and $1 for food.”

  • The entire post was captured and shared by viral Instagram page The Shade Room

Evans also revealed she is saving the money given by her daughter for future savings.

“Now, what she doesn’t know is the $5 is actually going away in her savings account which I will give back to her when she turns 18,” Evans wrote. “So if she decides to move out on her own she will have $3,380 to start off.”

  • Evans was applauded by many for teaching her daughter a lesson and creating a savings plan

  • While some felt Evans' daughter is too young to understand the lesson

  • Perhaps making her daughter spend most of her money on bills is also sending the wrong message about money management
