After the news broke of an alleged affair between Donald Trump and porn star Stormy Daniels, one of the president's largest group of followers, evangelical Christians, gave him a pass. Now Democrats are calling the moral and religious leaders out for their hypocritical views.
In a 2011 interview, Stormy Daniels alleged she had a sexual affair with Donald Trump just four months after his wife Melania gave birth to their son Barron. The reports also claimed Stormy Daniels was paid $130,000 to stay quiet before the 2016 election, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
Although many believed this alleged conduct would make Republicans finally denounce Trump, his supporters more-or-less doubled down on their allegiance.
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a prominent evangelical activist group, appeared on a podcast and said he and other religious leaders are giving Trump a "do-over."
“We kind of gave him — ‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’” Perkins told Zack Stanton while speaking on Politico’s Off Message podcast.
According to Perkins, evangelicals "were tired of being kicked around by Barack Obama and his leftists. And I think they are finally glad that there’s somebody on the playground that is willing to punch the bully."
