A comedy sketch that aired on a Chinese network for the New Year has been called “racist” for its use of blackface and African stereotypes.

During the Spring Festival Gala, a highly viewed television program on Chinese television network CCTV, a sketch meant to highlight the business connections between Africa and China depicted an Asian woman wearing blackface makeup and a large, fake butt, reported The Independent.

The woman carried a fruit plate on her head and was accompanied by an actor, who is reportedly African, who was dressed up as a monkey.

  1. During the sketch, the woman in Blackface screamed, "I love China," while other Black actors on stage were silent and used as props
  2. For people looking forward to Chinese New Year, the racist display quickly ruined their excitement
  3. Many Chinese people said the sketch made them "ashamed" of their country
  4. The Gala was called out for using African stereotypes to perpetuate a negative view of Black people
  5. During the sketch, no one in the audience appeared disturbed and laughed at the woman in Blackface, as if it was minstrelsy
