After having a heated political discussion at the workplace, a woman in Tampa, Fla., said she found a monkey with a noose around its neck with a racist note on her desk.
On Feb. 21, Terri Silar posted pictures a monkey hanging from her chair by a noose in her office. The monkey had a note attached to it and there was another note taped to Silar’s computer. Both notes used a racial slur.
“You are getting deported back to Africa n****r & that will make America great again,” read one note that was signed “Whites 4 Trump.”
The other note read, “N****r b***h,” added another note that was stuck to her computer.
After her post went viral, Silar spoke with local news station WTSP about how the racist incident made her feel. “I had 18 emotions going through my mind. I was shocked, but most of all I was hurt,” Silar told WTSP.
Silar said she immediately asked her co-workers if they knew about the monkey and reported the incident to her general manger.
“They were just as appalled as I was,” she told WTSP.
Silar told the news station she found the monkey after she and several co-workers had been discussing the Parkland school shooting when they began debating gun policies and ideas of Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama.
Silar said the conversation became so tense, she ended up walking out of the room. The next day, the monkey appeared.
“I felt threatened. I didn’t feel safe. For someone to be that bold. That is a blatant boldness and a hate crime. It is a monkey with a noose around its neck. What message do you think I’m going to take from that?” she told WSTP.
Although Silar declined to tell WTSP the name of the company in order to protect the business, she said company leadership has backed her 100 percent and is being very supportive.
