School Surveillance Video Capturing “Accidental” Fatal Shooting Of Teen Raises Questions

Michael Jerome Barber was charged with manslaughter in the death of Courtlin Arrington.

After reviewing school surveillance videos of a shooting that took place on Wednesday, police have charged an Alabama teenager with manslaughter and illegal firearms possession in connection with the death of his classmate.

Michael Jerome Barber is accused of bringing a gun onto the campus Huffman High School. At the end of the school day, gunfire erupted and 17-year-old Courtlin Arrington was struck, Jefferson County District Attorney Mike Anderton told AL.com.

Although authorities have not said where Arrington was shot, they did confirm she was given CPR at the scene and en route to UAB Hospital. Corrington was pronounced dead upon arrival at 4:16 p.m.

Barber suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg and was released into police custody after being treated in the emergency room.

A motive has not been released. When the shooting was first reported, police believed the gun was accidentally discharged. It was assumed that a student brought the gun to school and was showing it off when the trigger was accidentally pulled.

However, after the police reviewed surveillance video of the shooting and interviewed witnesses, they filed charges against Barber.

Friends of Arrington said she was was going to graduate in May, had already been accepted into college and had dreams to become a nurse, reported WVTM.

Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Lisa Herring said the school has two working metal detectors but they were not in use on Wednesday.
