A young mother has been arrested by Raleigh police in North Carolina after she was identified as the woman giving her baby marijuana in a viral Facebook video.
20-year-old Brianna Ashanti Lofton was charged with two counts of felony child abuse, contributing to delinquency and possession of marijuana, reported WRAL.
According to Lofton’s arrest warrants, obtained by WRAL News, Raleigh police confirmed the unnamed child was smoking marijuana in the video, which was recorded at some point in December or January.
After her arrest, Lofton was taken to the Wake County Detention Center. The baby has been placed with Wake County Child Protective Services.
A 10-second clip of the video was reshared by a Facebook user who urged for the mother to be identified and arrested. The clip received over 1.5 million views before it was removed. In the the clip, a hand holding what appears to be a cigarillo brings the drug to the child’s lips. The child then makes a cooing sound and appears to inhale before letting out a puff of smoke.
The Raleigh Police Department said Wednesday that the child was safe.
“Big thanks to everyone who posted information about the smoking mother and baby,” department officials told their Facebook followers in a post. “Thanks to your willingness to get involved, the child is now safe and the mother is in police custody.”
Lofton has previous charges of simple assault, simple affray and violation of pretrial release conditions.
